Construction completion in December 2010
With numerous guests from politics, economy and research, as well as the craftsmen involved, the completion of the shell and the putting on of the roof truss of the new sports research hall of the Centre for Sports Science and Sports Medicine Berlin (CSSB) were solemnly honoured.
On behalf of the Federal Minister of Health, Stefan Kapferer, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health, sent greetings to the Federal Government. Thomas Härtel, State Secretary for Sport from the Berlin Senate Department for the Interior and Sport, took part in the festivities and praised the construction of the Sports Research Hall as an exemplary investment in the future of popular and top-class sport.
Located on Hannoversche Strasse in Berlin Mitte, the 2,500 sqm hall complex houses a 3-field hall, a multi-purpose hall, a gym and a multimedia room. The new building will in future be used by scientists from the CSSB as well as students from the Institute of Sports Science and the Humboldt University of Berlin.
The sports research hall thus complements the recently renovated and modernised office and laboratory building of the interdisciplinary sports centre from Charité and HU.
Complex measuring systems in the sports research hall enable large-format motion and sports science analyses to be carried out. With the help of special cameras and force plates embedded in the floor, the movements of individual athletes and entire teams can be observed at the same time. Top athletes can thus be helped to improve their performances and techniques. At the same time, new methods and therapy concepts for prevention and rehabilitation are developed and tested for patients.
Despite the bad weather conditions that persisted in the first half of 2010, the completion of the sports research hall, which will be built as a passive house, is planned for December 2010.
Following the greetings and speeches, the master craftsman of the construction company presented the traditional toast and conveyed congratulations for the future:
[...] Art and science live high,
that builds such houses and creates value,
even in the most ancient of times
our art has always been widely known.
The celebration hour has struck
after many busy days,
the trained hand rests,
The topping-out crown greets the land with joy.
The hall is now erected,
what caring has committed us to,
so fresh, pious, cheerful, free
in body and soul be everyone. […]
At the traditional topping-out ceremony that followed, all participants and guests were able to convince themselves of the interior of the shell and discuss the sports research hall and its future.
