Another research aspect is the improvement of the anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) procedure healing outcome, which is an effective surgical treatment for cervical spondylosis, disc herniation and degenerative disc disease. So far, the use of autologous cancellous bone graft harvested from the iliac crest remains the golden standard for a sufficient fusion result. Due to the comorbidity at the harvesting site (pain, bleeding) we investigate alternative strategies for a safe and solid fusion.

The existing biomechanical forces within the intervertebral disc are characterized in a model. The gained knowledge is used for the improvement of spinal implants and alternative fusion concepts.
