Spine Biomechanics

Chronic low back pain is a significant public health problem in industrialized society. The intact spine carries the upper body and external loads, allows motion in a physiological range and protects the spinal cord. These different demands necessitate a high degree of complexity with various sources for disorders and pain. The BIH - Julius Wolff Institute conducts research in order to counter pain causes and to further optimize the pain treatment.

Diagnostic and intervention in everyday situations

At times of demographic change and shortage of skilled workers, the staff of a company is its most valuable resource. Maintaining the health of these employees therefore becoming increasingly important. In Germany, back and joint pain are the cause of about one in ten sick leave. Due to the high number of disability days ergonomics at the workplace is becoming increasingly important, with the aim to avoid back pain that can be caused by missing and forced postures, lifting and carrying heavy loads or continuously standing and sitting. Posture and movement analysis play an important role in the introduction and evaluation of ergonomic optimization. The instruments sporadically used until today for workplace survey are limited in their handling and their results. They allow for example, only short-term measurements under laboratory conditions. Further, the current recommendations for ergonomic alignment of the workplace are outdated and do not take into account the individual needs and differences in form and function of the spine of each employee.

The aim is to test our developed diagnostic methods and intervention programs under everyday conditions in the corporate world in various industries.
